Every day on a job site brings a new set of variables: changing conditions, tight timelines, and complex work. In that kind of environment, clarity matters. At Interstates, we remove uncertainty by defining the non-negotiables that protect our people when the stakes are highest.

One of the clearest expressions of that commitment is our three Life-Saving Rules. These are not guidelines or suggestions. They are non-negotiable expectations designed to protect our people from the most serious risks in our industry—and to ensure every individual goes home in the same condition they arrived.

Our three Life-Saving Rules are simple, clear, and intentional:

Each rule targets a high-risk activity where a single misstep can have life-altering consequences. Lockout/Tagout protects against unexpected energy release. Tie-offs address the leading cause of fatalities in construction: falls. Strict controls around energized work reduce exposure to electrical shock and arc flash hazards.

These rules exist because experience—both ours and the industry’s—has shown where the greatest risks lie. And while procedures and equipment continue to evolve, the principle remains the same: some risks are too significant to leave to chance.

But these rules are about more than compliance. They reflect a culture where people look out for one another and take ownership of safety at every level. Whether someone is on a job site or in an office, we expect everyone at Interstates to know these rules and have the confidence to speak up when something doesn’t look right. That’s what it means to live out the organization-wide safety philosophy of “You Matter, I Care.”

For our clients and trade partners, this mindset translates into more than safe job sites. It means work that is planned thoroughly, executed consistently, and delivered with fewer disruptions and less risk. Strong safety practices are a leading indicator of strong project outcomes.

For those considering a career with Interstates, it means joining a team where your well-being is taken seriously—where safety isn’t left to chance or treated as a checklist, but built into how work gets done every day.

Every workplace, every team, and every role carries its own set of risks. Identifying the moments that matter most—the tasks with no margin for error—is the first step. Defining clear, non-negotiable behaviors around those moments is what turns awareness into action.

Because in the end, safety isn’t just about policies or programs. It’s about clarity, consistency, and care. It’s about making sure that no matter the environment, everyone has the structure and support they need to do their work safely and to build a career that lasts.

At Interstates, our 3 Life-Saving Rules help keep that focus where it belongs: on protecting people, every day.
