Preparing for NFPA 70B Updates

NFPA 70B, part of the National Electric Code (NEC), provides organizations with guidelines for effective electrical maintenance programs. By adhering to these guidelines, facilities can ensure their electrical systems operate efficiently and safely throughout their expected service life. In 2023, NFPA 70B transitioned from a set of recommendations to a mandatory standard, making early planning crucial for compliance. Here are the essential steps your facility should take to prepare for this change.

Designate an Electrical Maintenance Coordinator (NFPA 70B section 4.2)

The coordinator is responsible for:

  • Training and program audits to ensure personnel know the procedures and can consistently perform them.
  • Regular equipment inspections.
  • Integration with broader safety programs.
  • Familiarity with appropriate regulations, such as the NEC code, NFPA 70E, and NFPA 70B.

Perform a Current State Assessment

  • Review diagrams and studies to ensure they reflect current system configurations.
  • Analyze existing systems and procedures to identify any non-compliance.
  • Review current records and record-keeping procedures.
  • Categorize electrical equipment.
  • Perform inspections or tests.

Update Single-Line Diagrams and Compliance Studies Older Than 5 Years

  • Include studies such as arc flash, short circuit, load, flow, and reliability.

Address Non-Compliance Issues

  • Correct any non-compliance per NFPA 70B and manufacturer guidelines identified in steps 2 and 3.

Establish Maintenance Intervals

  • Set intervals based on the assessment from step 2.
  • Follow manufacturer recommendations first, then refer to NFPA 70B Chapter 9.

Update Documentation and Indicators

  • Store updated documents and indicators where the electrical maintenance coordinator can easily access them.
  • Include decals or other visual markers.

Continuously Improve Maintenance Program and Facility Safety

  • Implement regular audits, training, and other improvement activities.
  • Consider creating a regular maintenance schedule.

As you begin creating a maintenance program to adhere to this change, remember that requirements are based on the criticality of your equipment and will follow condition assessments. If you're looking for a partner in your maintenance program, contact bdev@interstates.com or call 712-722-1662.
