Apprenticeships at Interstates

Start your electrical career with hands-on training, mentorship, and real exposure to industrial work. Apprentices work closely with journeymen and foremen to learn essential skills such as: 

  • Installing raceways, pulling wire, and powering equipment
  • Operating tools, lifts, and related equipment
  • Supporting layout, material handling, and basic troubleshooting
  • Participating in pre-job hazard analysis and identifying safe work steps
  • Learning and applying Interstates’ I-Coaching approach to continuous improvement

What Journeyman Electricians Do Industrial Journeyman Electrician

Journeyman electricians bring industrial and heavy commercial projects to life through hands-on electrical work and jobsite leadership. You will collaborate closely with apprentices, foremen, and superintendents while completing essential tasks such as: 

  • Measuring, cutting, threading, and installing rigid conduit
  • Measuring, cutting, and installing cable tray and basket tray
  • Pulling and terminating wire
  • Wiring motors, instruments, equipment, and industrial systems
  • Troubleshooting electrical issues across 24v–480v systems
  • Working with PLCs, relays, and control systems
  • Creating and executing work plans for daily tasks and project phases
  • Leading reporting on labor and material installation and supporting progress tracking
  • Leading and mentoring 2–3 apprentices, aligned with state ratio requirements, as they develop their skills
  • Maintaining strong safety standards and helping set the tone for the crew

Lead Work, Solve Problems, and Build a Positive Crew Culture Electrical Foreman

Foremen guide teams of three to fifteen electricians and blend hands-on work with planning, coordination, and mentoring. This role is ideal for electricians who enjoy helping others grow while managing project needs. As a foreman, you will:

  • Lead crews in daily electrical installation and layout
  • Solve on-site problems and support project decision-making
  • Mentor apprentices and journeymen to help them reach their potential

Lead Multiple Teams and Guide Projects from Start to Finish Electrical Superintendent

Superintendents oversee project-wide planning and execution, coordinating several crews while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to specification. In this role you will: 

  • Coordinate multiple crews, subcontractors, and field partners
  • Plan work, identify risks early, and maintain project momentum
  • Manage schedules, productivity, and resource allocation
  • Build strong relationships with clients and project teams
  • Mentor and support foremen and journeymen as they grow into leadership
  • Ensure quality, consistency, and safety across the jobsite
  • Oversee troubleshooting, sequencing, and site-wide coordination

Field Leader Excellence (FLE) Program

Interstates invests in long-term leadership development through the Field Leader Excellence (FLE) program. FLE provides structured training for electricians moving into leadership roles and focuses on:

Frequently Asked Questions

For Apprentice Electricians: We’re looking for candidates interested in becoming licensed through our DOL-approved Electrical Apprenticeship Program. Candidates with a certificate or AS degree in electrical technology, electrical construction, instrumentation, or similar or equivalent experience are preferred.  

For Journeyman Electricians: We’re looking for candidates with state-issued journeyman electrician licenses. Industrial electrical experience is required, but heavy commercial and industrial experience preferred.  

For Foreman and Electrical Superintendents: We’re looking for candidates with state-issued journeyman electrician licenses (or equivalent). Leadership experience is required.  

Yes! Our Electrical Apprenticeship program combines hands-on experience with classroom instruction over 3-4 years. It prepares you for the journeyman electrical licensing exam and offers a path to success in a high-demand field.

Traveling roles support national industrial projects with consistent crews. Regional roles allow electricians to work near home while still growing their technical and leadership skills. 

Team members often shift from traveling to regional positions as their home life changes, and others move from regional roles into traveling positions for broader experience.

We complete industrial projects across the lower 48 states, with most work concentrated in the central U.S. from Minnesota to Texas and Wyoming to Ohio. Regional offices support localized hiring and crew development.

Many electricians advance from apprentice to journeyman, then into foreman and superintendent roles. Some also transition into project management, estimating, safety leadership, or office positions, depending on strengths and long-term goals.
