Interstates Companies Advances on EC&M Magazine's List of Top 50 Electrical Contractors

October 31, 2011

Sioux Center, Iowa

Interstates Companies has climbed four positions to rank #44 on EC&M Magazine’s (Electrical Construction & Maintenance) 2011 list of Top 50 Electrical Contractors.

David Krahling, Vice President of Business Development for Interstates Companies says, “While other areas of the economy are reporting some signs of a slow economic recovery, the construction industry is still plagued by a shortage of new construction projects and growth. It is encouraging that Interstates has been able to maintain a steady revenue stream when at the same time other companies on the Top 50 list are reporting revenue decreases as much as 49% from last year.”

Interstates’ strategy for weathering the economic storm includes many tactics. One strategy is diversification by working in different industries and by offering a range of professional and technical services for clients including Electrical Construction, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Systems. Another strategy is the application of lean principles that originally started in the manufacturing arena. “We have worked hard to apply lean principles all throughout our business,” says Krahling. “We’re doing things such as prefabrication to drive waste, or ‘muda’ out of our processes. We’ve made some significant progress that has allowed us to be a little more aggressive with our pricing while still maintaining profitability.”

The EC&M Top 50 Electrical Contractors listing was established to honor excellence in electrical contracting in the construction industry. The Top 50 showcases the top electrical contracting firms in the nation and acts as gauge by which other firms may measure themselves by monitoring the work of their peers.

The Interstates Companies specialize in turnkey electrical systems for industrial, value-added agriculture, and hazardous facilities. Together, they offer full service design-build electrical contracting, engineering, automation and instrumentation on a worldwide basis.
